In the fitness industry, every model dreams about a good sponsorship deal.
There are a ton of fitness models that have outstanding physiques. Since you are here, I’d imagine you are probably one of them. While we all want free supplements, or be on the front page in a magazine, it doesn’t happen by accident.
Only YOU can set yourself up for success. Here is what you need to know to land that fitness industry sponsorship.
DO I HAVE TO COMPETE IN SHOWS TO GET SPONSORED?
No, You Don’t. While placing in a bodybuilding competition may help you add some followers or exposure, it’s not needed to land a fitness industry sponsorship.
There are plenty of sponsored fitness models who have never done a show. Even more compete in shows, but have never placed top 3. Likewise, there are models who have won plenty of shows but haven’t landed a fitness sponsorship.
Competitors are the ones who get wrapped around show titles. Sponsors are more interested in who you are, than what you’ve done. A large audience is much more valuable to a sponsor than what you do on the stage.
Sponsors want people to view you as their fitness role model. Your audience most likely trusts your advice, which adds credibility to the sponsors brand or products.
DO I HAVE TO HAVE A HUGE FOLLOWING?
Social media is one of the best ways to connect with a brands target audience.
Using Facebook, Instagram, Google+ or Twitter, you can build your own fitness network. However, fitness companies don’t usually sponsor athletes simply because of their social following. It’s less about how many, and more about who!

WHAT DO SPONSORS WANT?
Sponsors want fit models who have a basic knowledge of their product, supplements or athletic apparel. They also want outgoing models who aren’t afraid of talking with others about the brand. You need to be able to speak intelligently and confidently in order to represent the company in a positive way.
Attitude is everything. Even if you aren’t sure if you can be outgoing or confident around groups of people, you can still get sponsored with a positive attitude!
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GET DISCOVERED?
There are a lot of models out there wanting a sponsorship. Your Athlete Listing needs to set you apart. Your bio should show an outgoing, hardworking model that a company would want to have on their team.
The hardest part of becoming a sponsored athlete? Getting a sponsor’s attention!
HOW MUCH DO SPONSORS MAKE?
Most fitness sponsorships and agreements are basically a trade of services. Unless you’re competing in the Olympia or have a million followers, you probably won’t get paid much, or at all.
In the fitness industry, if you are happy doing a lot for a little, you’ll go far with a sponsorship. Fitness companies value their products and offer them as a means of payment for your promotion and marketing.
Supplement companies pay you with supplements. Apparel companies pay you with apparel. Some do both, some do less. It just depends on the company and your contract.
WHAT IF I NEVER GET SPONSORED?
Don’t let anyone fool you, fitness sponsorship’s are rare. They aren’t going to pay for a service unless they see value in doing so. Not every model or athlete will get signed. Just like not every high school football players gets signed with the NFL.
But you should never lose hope. Keep your Athlete Listing fresh and up to date. Add new pictures and accomplishments as you grow. Have your friends vouch for your work ethic by writing Reviews. Stay positive and work hard. The only real failure is the failure to try!
